Right Lower Quadrant(RLQ) Pain: Beyond the boundaries of appendicitis
نویسنده
چکیده
s: Right lower quadrant abdominal pain (RLQP) is one of the commonest causes for surgical emergencies. Beyond appendicitis and ileocecal (IC) tuberculosis; right iliac fossa pain indicates a varied list of differential diagnoses thus posing a challenge to surgeons. Causes of RLQP other than appendicitis and IC tuberculosis include inflammatory and infectious conditions involving the ileocecal region; diverticulitis; malignancies; pelvic cystic pathologies in women and miscellaneous conditions affecting omentum and mesentery. Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) has seen a quantum leap since its introduction for bowel pathology and is now the modality of choice for evaluation of patients with right lower quadrant pain. MDCT is an extremely useful noninvasive method for diagnosis and management of not only the most common causes such as appendicitis, but also less common conditions.[Goel N NJIRM 2015; 6(5):125-133]

Valentino’s Syndrome: A Life-Threatening Mimic of Acute Appendicitis
Perforated ulcers are a rare cause of abdominal pain, and may not be considered when pain is localized to the right lower quadrant (RLQ). This case highlights an unusual presentation of a perforated duodenal ulcer that presented with RLQ pain, which has been described as Valentino’s Syndrome. Valentino’s Syndrome occurs when gastric or duodenal fluids collect in the right paracolic gutter causi...

متن کاملAcute abdomen caused by both acute appendicitis and epididymitis.
Acute appendicitis often presents as right lower quadrant (RLQ) pain, severe tenderness at the point of McBurny or Lanz, and Blumberg's sign. Scrotal events with appendicitis are very rare. In our case, a 63-year-old Japanese man presented with severe RLQ pain and high fever. Physical examination revealed severe tenderness (including both points of McBurny and Lanz) and Blumberg's sign. The scr...
متن کاملBeyond appendicitis: common and uncommon gastrointestinal causes of right lower quadrant abdominal pain at multidetector CT.
Right lower quadrant abdominal pain is one of the most common causes of a patient visit to the emergency department. Although appendicitis is the most common condition requiring surgery in patients with abdominal pain, right lower quadrant pain can be indicative of a vast list of differential diagnoses and is thus a challenge for clinicians. Other causes of right lower quadrant pain beyond appe...
متن کاملRoutine versus selective abdominal computed tomography scan in the evaluation of right lower quadrant pain: a randomized controlled trial.
OBJECTIVES To determine the role of abdominal computed tomography (CT) imaging in patients with right lower quadrant (RLQ) pain. The authors hypothesized that selective use of abdominal CT would reduce imaging without increasing the rates of negative appendectomy and perforated appendicitis. METHODS A prospective randomized clinical trial was conducted in a community teaching emergency depart...
